4L80E Conversion Packages for GM & LS Swaps

The 4L80E is a popular transmission upgrade for GM trucks, street cars, muscle cars, restomods and LS-powered builds that need greater transmission capability while retaining four-speed automatic overdrive.

Twisted Torque 4L80E conversion packages are designed for applications moving from transmissions such as the 4L60E, 4L65E and 4L70E to the heavier-duty 4L80E platform. A 4L80E can also be an excellent overdrive conversion for vehicles originally equipped with older three-speed GM automatics such as the TH350 or TH400.


4L60E to 4L80E Conversion

A 4L60E-to-4L80E swap is not a direct transmission replacement. Depending on the vehicle and model year, the conversion may require changes to the crossmember or transmission mount location, driveshaft, output yoke, cooler lines, wiring and electronic transmission control.

Factory computer-controlled vehicles may require wiring changes and PCM/ECM programming or tuning for proper 4L80E operation. Older vehicles, custom builds and LS swaps may use a compatible standalone transmission controller depending on the engine management system.


4L80E for LS Swaps

The 4L80E is commonly used behind GM LS engines in classic cars, trucks, restomods and performance builds. Its combination of heavy-duty construction, electronic control and overdrive makes it a popular option when additional transmission capability is needed.

Every LS swap is different. Vehicle chassis, engine management, transmission tunnel clearance, crossmember location, driveshaft length, exhaust clearance and electronic control should be considered when planning the conversion.


TH350 or TH400 to 4L80E Conversion

Converting from a TH350 or TH400 to a 4L80E gives classic GM applications the benefit of four forward gears, overdrive and a lockup torque converter.

Installation requirements depend on the vehicle and existing drivetrain. Crossmember location, driveshaft length and yoke, shifter compatibility, cooler lines, flexplate and converter arrangement, wiring and transmission control should all be verified before installation.

What Do I Need to Swap From a 4L60E to a 4L80E?
A 4L60E-to-4L80E conversion involves more than just swapping the transmission. Depending on the vehicle and model year, you may need the correct torque converter and flexplate setup, wiring changes, computer tuning, crossmember or mount changes, driveshaft modifications, cooler-line changes and the proper output yoke or 4WD driveline setup. Is a 4L80E Stronger Than a 4L60E?
Yes. The 4L80E was designed for heavier-duty applications and uses a larger, more robust internal design than the 4L60E. That's why the 4L80E is such a popular upgrade for higher-horsepower builds, towing applications, performance trucks and vehicles where the 4L60E has become the weak link. A properly built 4L80E can also be upgraded substantially beyond its original factory capability.
Will I Need to Modify My Driveshaft or Crossmember for a 4L80E Swap?
Often, yes. The 4L80E differs physically from the 4L60E, including the transmission mount location and overall configuration. Depending on the vehicle, the crossmember may need to be relocated or replaced, and the driveshaft may need to be shortened, modified or replaced with the correct yoke. Always verify the requirements for your specific year, make, model and drivetrain before installation.
Does a 4L60E-to-4L80E Swap Require Wiring or Computer Tuning?
Yes, in most electronically controlled applications. Although both transmissions are electronically controlled, their wiring and control requirements are not identical. Depending on the vehicle, the conversion may involve a wiring adapter or connector changes, additional speed-sensor wiring and PCM/ECM programming or tuning so the computer correctly controls the 4L80E.
Can I Run a 4L80E Behind an LS Engine?
Yes. The 4L80E is one of the most popular transmission choices behind an LS engine, especially when the vehicle makes more power than we would normally recommend putting through a 4L60E. We use them in everything from LS-swapped classics and street cars to performance trucks. The transmission still needs to be built for the actual horsepower, torque, vehicle weight and use. You also need the correct converter, wiring and transmission control for the application.
Can I Replace My TH400 With a 4L80E?
Yes. If you like the strength of a TH400 but want overdrive and a lockup converter for better highway driving, a 4L80E is a great option. It is not a direct bolt-in swap. Depending on the vehicle, you may need crossmember and driveshaft changes, the correct yoke, cooler-line changes and electronic transmission control. Can I Use My 4L60E Torque Converter With a 4L80E?
We recommend using a converter built specifically for the 4L80E and matched to the engine and vehicle. Converter selection is a big part of how the transmission performs. Horsepower, torque, camshaft, vehicle weight, rear gear, tire size and how you drive the vehicle all matter when choosing the correct converter. Our conversion packages can be ordered with the proper 4L80E converter for your combination.
How Much Horsepower Can a 4L80E Handle?
That depends on how the transmission is built. A stock 4L80E and a performance-built 4L80E are two completely different animals. Internal upgrades, clutch capacity, hydraulics, hard parts, converter selection, vehicle weight and engine torque all affect what the transmission can reliably handle. Twisted Torque offers different 4L80E build levels so we can match the transmission to the actual vehicle instead of selling everyone the same build.
Do I Need a Standalone Controller for a 4L80E Swap?
Not always. If the vehicle has a compatible factory PCM/ECM, the 4L80E may be controlled through the factory computer with the proper wiring and tuning. Classic vehicles, carbureted applications and some engine swaps will require a standalone transmission controller. Can I Put a 4L80E in a 2WD or 4WD Truck?
Yes. The 4L80E was used in both 2WD and 4WD applications, but you need the correct transmission configuration for the vehicle. A 4WD conversion also has to account for the transfer case, adapter and output setup. Do not order based only on “4L80E.” Give us the year, make, model, engine, current transmission, 2WD or 4WD and transfer-case information so we can make sure you're starting with the right setup.

Don't choose a 4L80E based on horsepower alone.
