Common 5R110W Factory Problems We Address

The 5R110W is known for several issues that can lead to slipping, pressure loss and premature transmission failure.

  • Pressure-regulator valve wear: Updated regulator parts help address sticking valves, pressure spikes and low line pressure.
  • Valve-body pressure-switch plugs: Updated metal plugs with improved sealing help prevent internal pressure leaks.
  • Low/Reverse retaining ring: Heavy-duty retaining ring helps prevent the ring from dislodging and damaging the case.
  • Forward drum sealing rings: Updated rings help reduce clutch apply-pressure leakage.
  • Pump vent problems: TransGo vent correction addresses a known factory issue.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common Ford 5R110W transmission problems?
Common complaints include slipping, harsh shifts, delayed engagement, loss of Overdrive, converter clutch problems and a flashing Tow/Haul light. Worn pressure-regulator valves, leaking pressure-switch plugs, failed solenoids and internal clutch damage are some of the known trouble spots. Twisted Torque addresses these factory issues with updated pump and valve-body parts, new internal solenoids, new wiring and upgraded clutch materials.
Which 5R110W transmission do I need for my Power Stroke?
We offer three diesel builds: Street — 450 HP / 650 LB-FT: Stock engines, daily driving and towing. Pro — 550 HP / 750 LB-FT: Mild tuning, HD clutch packs, HD steels and billet-cover converter. Punisher — 700 HP / 1,000 LB-FT: Modified diesel engines, Twisted™ 300M billet shafts, stronger geartrain and multi-clutch converter. Both horsepower and engine torque matter. If your truck is tuned, contact us with your engine modifications before ordering.
Can I tow with a Twisted Torque 5R110W performance transmission?
Can I tow with a Twisted Torque 5R110W performance transmission? Yes. Our Street, Pro and Punisher builds can be used for towing when matched to the truck's power, weight and intended use. Street is intended for factory-powered work and tow trucks. Pro adds clutch and converter holding capacity, while Punisher includes billet hard parts for more demanding applications. Transmission upgrades do not increase your truck's factory towing or weight ratings.
Will a 2008–2010 6.4L 5R110W transmission fit my 6.0L Power Stroke?
Not all 5R110W transmissions interchange directly. Ford made internal and application-specific changes throughout production, including clutch, geartrain and filter updates. We verify the year, VIN, engine, drivetrain, case and PTO requirements to supply the correct transmission for your truck.
Does your 5R110W transmission include a torque converter?
Yes. Every Twisted Torque 5R110W Diesel build includes a converter. Street: OEM-style converter at factory stall. Pro: Upgraded billet-cover performance converter at stock stall. Punisher: Multi-clutch billet-cover performance converter at stock stall.
Why is my Tow/Haul light flashing on my Ford 6.0L or 6.4L?
A flashing Tow/Haul light indicates the transmission control system has detected a fault. Possible causes include failed solenoids, speed sensor problems, converter clutch faults or internal transmission problems. The transmission trouble codes should be read with a Ford-capable scan tool before replacing parts. A flashing light does not automatically mean the entire transmission needs rebuilding.
What fluid should I use in my Ford 5R110W transmission?
The 5R110W originally used MERCON SP in earlier applications, while later applications specified MERCON LV. Ford's current service information and the transmission's application determine the correct approved fluid. Always confirm the required fluid before filling the transmission. Incorrect fluid type or fluid level can cause shifting and converter clutch problems.
