Built in-house for classic GM cars, trucks, hot rods and performance swaps. Choose from Street, Pro and Punisher 700R4 builds rated from 450 HP up to 650 HP, with overdrive, lockup capability and available converter, gearing, valve body and extreme-duty upgrades.

Built 700R4 Transmissions for Street, Hot Rod & Performance Applications

The GM 700R4 is one of the most popular automatic overdrive transmissions for classic cars, muscle cars, street rods and trucks because it combines a low 3.06 first gear with overdrive and converter lockup capability.

Twisted Torque builds our 700R4 transmissions in-house for the vehicle, engine and intended use instead of treating every application the same.

Our Twisted Street™ 700R4 is designed for street-driven combinations making up to 450 HP. The Twisted Pro™ 700R4 steps up to 550 HP for higher-output street and performance applications. The Twisted Punisher™ 700R4 is our highest-level standard 700R4 build, rated up to 650 HP for serious hard-street and street/strip combinations.

Available upgrades include higher-stall and billet torque converters, full-manual and transbrake valve body options, heavy-duty input upgrades, Sonnax Smart-Tech® hardware and 2.84 close-ratio gearing for applications that need additional strength or a different performance setup.

Popular 700R4 Applications

700R4 transmissions are commonly used in Chevrolet and GM muscle cars, C10 and C/K trucks, Camaro, Firebird, Chevelle, Nova, Monte Carlo, El Camino, street rods, hot rods and custom GM drivetrain swaps.

Choosing the Right 700R4

Horsepower is only part of the equation. Engine torque, vehicle weight, converter stall, rear gear, tire size, traction, boost, nitrous and intended use all affect transmission load.

Tell us what you're building and we'll help determine whether a Street, Pro or Punisher is right for the combination.

For combinations making serious power beyond the normal limits of the 700R4 platform, we may recommend moving to a properly built 4L80E rather than continuing to add parts to a 700R4.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much horsepower can a 700R4 handle?
A stock 700R4 was not designed for today's high-horsepower street and strip combinations. Capacity depends heavily on the internal build, engine torque, vehicle weight, converter, gearing, tire and traction. Twisted Torque offers 700R4 builds from our Street™ rated up to 450 HP, Pro™ rated up to 550 HP, and Punisher™ rated up to 650 HP. For combinations beyond the normal limits of the 700R4 platform, especially high-torque, boosted, nitrous, heavy or hard-launch applications, we may recommend additional extreme-duty upgrades or moving to a 4L80E.
What is the difference between the Twisted Street, Pro and Punisher 700R4?
Street™ – Up to 450 HP Street cars, cruisers, hot rods and mild performance combinations. Pro™ – Up to 550 HP Higher-output street cars, harder use and street/strip combinations. Punisher™ – Up to 650 HP Our highest standard 700R4 build for serious hard-street, street/strip, boost and nitrous applications. The higher build levels receive additional clutch, hydraulic and hard-part upgrades to handle increased power and load.
Is a 700R4 a good replacement for a TH350 or TH400?
Yes, and this is one of the most common forum questions. A 700R4 gives a classic GM vehicle a deeper 3.06:1 first gear and approximately 0.70:1 fourth-gear overdrive, giving stronger low-speed torque multiplication while reducing highway RPM. However, a conversion may require changes to the crossmember, driveshaft, yoke, TV cable system and converter-lockup wiring depending on the transmission being replaced. Already running a built TH400? Don't assume the 700R4 is automatically the better choice. At higher horsepower and torque levels, we'll look at the complete combination before recommending that you give up the strength of your TH400 just to gain overdrive.
Does a 700R4 need a computer?
No. The 700R4 is hydraulically controlled and does not require an electronic transmission controller to operate. Converter lockup still needs to be controlled, however, when installing the transmission into a vehicle that wasn't originally equipped for it.
Can I just hook the 700R4 TV cable to my carburetor?
Not necessarily. The carburetor or throttle body must have the correct TV cable geometry. Simply attaching the cable somewhere on the throttle linkage does not guarantee the proper amount or rate of TV cable movement. Correct geometry brackets/correction systems are available for common Holley, Edelbrock, Quadrajet and other applications.
Does a 700R4 have torque converter lockup?
Yes. The 700R4 was designed with a lockup torque converter. Lockup reduces converter slip during cruise and is especially useful during highway/overdrive operation. Swap applications need an appropriate method of controlling converter lockup. We can also build them as NON lock Up!
How do you wire the torque converter lockup on a Twisted Torque 700R4?
Twisted Torque 700R4 transmissions are built with a simple single-wire lockup connection. Supply 12V switched power to the lockup connection to engage the torque converter clutch. For customers who want additional control, aftermarket lockup systems are available that can add features such as brake-switch disengagement or additional lockup control for towing and other applications. Standard Twisted Torque setup: ✔ Single-wire connection ✔ 12V power activates lockup ✔ Simple for classic cars and swaps ✔ Optional aftermarket lockup-control systems available
