Engine to Transmission Adapters for Custom Swaps & Conversions

Building a custom drivetrain often means choosing the engine and automatic transmission that best fit your vehicle, horsepower goals and driving needs, even when those parts were never offered together from the factory. Engine-to-transmission adapter kits provide the connection needed to mate different engine and transmission bolt patterns for custom swaps, restomods, classic cars, trucks, Jeeps and performance builds.

Twisted Torque offers engine-to-transmission adapters, transmission adapter plates and conversion parts for a variety of Ford, Chevy, GM, Dodge and Mopar engine and automatic transmission combinations.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What Does an Engine-to-Transmission Adapter Do?
An engine-to-transmission adapter allows an engine to be connected to a transmission with a different bellhousing or bolt pattern. Depending on the application, an adapter system may use a precision-machined adapter plate, replacement bellhousing or additional components required to correctly position the transmission and torque converter. Some applications may also require a flexplate, crankshaft spacer, torque converter adapter, starter solution or application-specific hardware. The exact components depend on the engine and transmission combination being used. This is why choosing an adapter by the specific engine and transmission is important rather than selecting one based only on vehicle make.
Can I bolt a different transmission to my engine with an adapter?
Yes. An engine-to-transmission adapter allows many engines and automatic transmissions with different bellhousing bolt patterns to be used together. Adapter kits are commonly used for custom swaps, classic cars, trucks, Jeeps, restomods and performance builds. The exact adapter depends on the engine family and transmission model. Some engines within the same manufacturer even use different bellhousing patterns, so “Ford to Ford” or “GM to GM” does not automatically mean the transmission will bolt directly to the engine.
What do I need besides an engine-to-transmission adapter plate?
It depends on the engine and transmission combination. A complete conversion may require an adapter plate, crankshaft spacer or adapter, flexplate, starter, dowel pins and installation hardware. Other combinations may require different torque converter or flexplate provisions. The adapter plate solves the bellhousing connection, but the crankshaft, flexplate and torque converter must also have the correct relationship and spacing for the transmission to operate properly. For example, commercially available LS-to-Ford automatic kits can include the adapter plate, crank spacer, starter and hardware rather than just a plate.
How do I know which engine-to-transmission adapter I need?
Start by identifying the exact engine family and exact transmission model you are trying to connect. Year, engine displacement or family, transmission type and sometimes the specific transmission version can affect compatibility. Do not choose an adapter based only on the vehicle manufacturer. Ford, GM, Chevy, Dodge and Mopar have used multiple engine and transmission bolt patterns over the years. Some automatic transmissions also have an integral bellhousing, meaning the bellhousing cannot simply be swapped for another one.
