Built 200-4R Transmissions for Street, Performance & Street/Strip

Twisted Torque builds the 200-4R from mild street overdrive applications through 850 HP performance builds. Choose from Street, Pro, Punisher and Executioner levels, each built with the clutch, hydraulic, pump and hard-part upgrades required for its power level.

Every 200-4R is built to order and includes an application-matched torque converter. Complete 200-4R conversion packages are also available for classic GM overdrive swaps.

Twisted Torque 200-4R Performance Builds

The GM 200-4R is a four-speed automatic overdrive transmission commonly used in Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Chevrolet applications. Its multi-pattern bellhousing, compact size and 0.67 overdrive also make it a popular transmission for classic GM overdrive conversions.

Twisted Street™ 200-4R | 350-450 HP

Our Street 200-4R is a stock-based upgraded build for street-driven applications. It includes premium high-energy frictions and steels, a mild TransGo or Superior shift correction package, updated pump components and a new 1650 RPM stock-stall lock-up torque converter.

Twisted Pro™ 200-4R | 500-550 HP

The Pro steps up clutch and hydraulic capacity with a TransGo HD2-A calibration, dual-fed direct clutch, 3-clutch overdrive conversion, wide performance band, performance pump setup and a new 1800-2100 RPM lock-up torque converter.

Twisted Punisher™ 200-4R | Up to 650 HP

The Punisher moves into billet hard parts with a billet forward drum and shaft, 7-clutch direct, dual-feed direct, 3-clutch overdrive, Sonnax Super Hold servo, .500 TV boost system, application-selected 10 or 13-vane performance pump, deep-sump cast aluminum pan and a new 2300-2500 RPM performance lock-up torque converter.

Twisted Executioner™ 200-4R | Up to 850 HP

The Executioner is our highest-level 200-4R. It adds a 300M billet input shaft, billet forward drum and shaft, upgraded overdrive hard parts, upgraded planetary assemblies, 7-clutch dual-fed direct, expanded internal rollerization, .500 boost system and deep-sump cast aluminum pan.

The Executioner is a non-lockup build and includes a new 2500-2800 RPM non-lockup performance torque converter.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much horsepower can a 200-4R handle?
A stock 200-4R and a built performance 200-4R are two different transmissions. Power capacity depends on the internal build, engine torque, vehicle weight, traction and intended use. Twisted Torque offers Street builds rated 350-450 HP, Pro builds rated 500-550 HP, Punisher builds rated up to 650 HP and Executioner builds rated up to 850 HP. As power increases, we increase clutch capacity, hydraulic capacity and hard-part strength.
Is the TV cable on a 200-4R just a kickdown cable?
No. The TV cable is part of the transmission's pressure and shift-control system. Correct TV cable adjustment and correct throttle geometry are critical to proper 200-4R operation. Aftermarket carburetors and EFI systems may require geometry correction to reproduce the proper TV cable travel. Sonnax specifically offers 200-4R-compatible TV cable and Holley/Edelbrock linkage correction components for this reason. Incorrect TV cable geometry or adjustment can cause incorrect pressure and shift timing and can damage the transmission.
Can I replace a TH350, TH400 or Powerglide with a 200-4R?
Yes. The 200-4R is a popular overdrive conversion for classic GM vehicles, but don't assume every swap is identical. Depending on the vehicle and transmission being removed, the swap may require: Crossmember or mount changes TV cable and correct throttle geometry Converter wiring on lockup builds Speedometer gearing Shifter/linkage changes Cooler and cooler lines Driveshaft/yoke verification A short-tail TH350-to-200-4R conversion can be especially straightforward in some vehicles, while other TH350 configurations and TH400 swaps can require additional changes. Forum swap reports show exactly why we should verify the car instead of promising every customer a bolt-in swap.
Will I have to shorten my driveshaft for a 200-4R swap?
Not necessarily. Measure it. Some short-tail TH350 applications can retain the existing driveshaft and 27-spline yoke, and owners report direct swaps using them. Other TH350 configurations have different overall lengths, and TH400 applications are another story. Driveshaft length, yoke engagement and available slip must be checked with the transmission installed. Don't order a driveshaft based only on what transmission somebody on a forum had in their car.
Why does the output shaft on my 200-4R feel loose?
ome movement of the exposed output shaft with the transmission out of the vehicle and the slip yoke removed does not automatically indicate a bad transmission. The correct slip yoke engages the output shaft and is supported in the rear bushing when installed. Do not judge the condition of a 200-4R by grabbing the bare output shaft and checking how much it wiggles on the bench.
Does a 200-4R need a lock-up converter to have overdrive?
No. Fourth gear and converter lock-up are separate functions. The 200-4R has a 0.67:1 fourth-gear overdrive ratio. Converter lock-up is a separate TCC function. Our Street, Pro and Punisher builds use lock-up converters. Our 850 HP Executioner is built non-lockup only. TransGo also offers separate 200-4R lock-up and non-lockup hydraulic components, including a converter conversion valve specifically intended to correct lubrication flow when a non-lockup converter is used.
Can you change how hard my 200-4R shifts?
Yes. Our performance builds can be calibrated for different shift characteristics depending on the build and intended use. Available shift feel can range from Mild to Wild. TransGo's HD2-A performance kit itself provides firm-to-wild calibration options, along with a dual-feed 3rd clutch circuit and billet 2nd servo piston
What's the difference between a 200-4R and a 700R4?
Both are GM four-speed automatic overdrive transmissions, but they are different transmissions with different gearing, cases, internals and swap requirements. The 200-4R uses: 1st: 2.74 2nd: 1.57 3rd: 1.00 4th: 0.67 The 200-4R is popular in classic GM applications because of its compact package, gearing and multi-pattern GM bellhousing. Which transmission is right depends on the vehicle, engine, power level and intended use.
