C5 Corvette 4L60E Performance Transmissions

Built specifically for 1997-2004 C5 Corvette 5.7L LS1 automatic applications, our Twisted Torque™ C5 4L60E lineup gives you three distinct builds based on power level and vehicle use.

🔥 Twisted Street™ - Up To 450 HP

For stock LS1 Corvettes, bolt-ons, mild naturally aspirated builds and daily drivers.

⚙️ Twisted Pro™ - Up To 550 HP

For heads and cam combinations, modified LS1 builds, high-output naturally aspirated cars and mild power adders.

☠️ Twisted Punisher™ - Up To 750 HP

Our highest-level C5 4L60E for serious street/strip, supercharged, turbocharged and nitrous applications. Built with a Sonnax Smart-Tech input housing, 300M input shaft and billet multi-disc lockup converter.

All three are built specifically around the rear-mounted C5 Corvette 4L60E configuration.

Not sure which build you need? Choose based on your current power level, planned upgrades and how the car will be used.

Built Specifically for the C5 Corvette 4L60E

The automatic 1997-2004 C5 Corvette uses a rear-mounted 4L60E connected to the LS1 through the Corvette torque tube. This is not the same installation as a conventional front-mounted truck or passenger-car 4L60E, which is why our C5 transmissions are listed separately from our standard GM 4L60E builds.

Twisted Torque™ C5 4L60E transmissions are available in three performance levels.

Twisted Street™ 450 HP addresses the common wear and failure areas of the 4L60E while retaining street-friendly operation. It includes increased 3-4 clutch capacity, a heavy-duty reaction shell, performance 2-4 band, updated pump and valve body, and a heavy-duty stock-stall lockup converter.

Twisted Pro™ 550 HP steps up to a high-capacity 3-4 clutch, Sonnax SmartShell, reinforced input housing, 5-pinion forward and rear planetary gearsets, Sonnax Super Hold servos, an extra-wide performance band, TransGo 4L60E-HD2 calibration and an included 1800-2100 stall heavy-duty lockup converter.

Twisted Punisher™ 750 HP is our highest-level C5 4L60E. It adds a Sonnax Smart-Tech input housing, 300M heavy-duty input shaft, Smart-Tech high-capacity 3-4 clutch system, heavy-duty reaction shaft, extra-wide Kevlar band and billet multi-disc lockup torque converter matched to the vehicle combination.

C5 4L60E Performance Upgrades

Additional hard-part upgrades are available for customers who want to take their C5 4L60E even further, including a 300M heavy-duty C5 Corvette output shaft and Sonnax 2.84 close-ratio heavy-duty input carrier.

Individual hard-part upgrades do not automatically increase the published horsepower rating of the selected transmission build.

Choosing the Right C5 4L60E

Choose the transmission based on the actual engine output and intended use, not simply the modifications currently installed.

Up to 450 HP: Twisted Street™

451-550 HP: Twisted Pro™

551-750 HP: Twisted Punisher™

For high-traction cars, hard-launch applications, aggressive power adders or combinations operating near the upper end of a transmission's rating, contact Twisted Torque before ordering so the transmission and converter can be matched to the application.

Installation & Cooling

A clean, unrestricted transmission cooling system is required. The cooler and cooler lines must be properly flushed or replaced when contaminated.

While the transmission is removed, inspect the C5 torque tube, torque tube bearings, couplers, flexplate, differential mounts and transmission mounts.

A C5-specific +3.5-quart deep aluminum cooling pan is available as an optional upgrade.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all 1997-2004 C5 Corvette 4L60E transmissions the same?
No. The C5 used the 4L60E throughout the 1997-2004 automatic Corvette run, but GM made changes during production. Later 2001-2004 C5 units received stronger internal updates, including 5-pinion gearsets, while earlier units used different configurations. This is one reason the year and vehicle information must be verified before building or replacing a C5 4L60E. Twisted Torque performance builds are assembled to the specifications listed for each build rather than simply rebuilding whatever internal configuration happens to be in the original core.
Did the 2001-2004 C5 Corvette come with a 4L65E instead of a 4L60E?
No. This is one of the most common C5 transmission misconceptions. The automatic C5 Corvette continued to use the 4L60E, RPO M30, including the later 2001-2004 cars. Later C5 transmissions received stronger internal components, including 5-pinion gearsets, but that did not make them factory 4L65E transmissions. The C5 Z06 was manual only and was not equipped with the 4L60E automatic.
Is a C5 Corvette 4L60E the same as a truck or Camaro 4L60E?
No. Although many internal 4L60E components are shared, the C5 Corvette uses a rear-mounted transmission connected to the engine through the torque tube. The Corvette application has application-specific external components and output configuration. A truck, Camaro or other GM 4L60E should not be assumed to be a direct replacement for a C5 Corvette transmission just because it is also called a 4L60E. Corvette owners discussing interchange repeatedly run into exactly this issue. That's why Twisted Torque lists the 1997-2004 C5 Corvette 4L60E separately from our conventional GM 4L60E transmissions.
What stall converter should I use in my C5 Corvette?
It depends on the camshaft, engine combination, rear gear, tire size, power level and how the car is used. A higher-stall converter can improve launch and help a modified LS1 get into its powerband, but more stall isn't automatically better. Higher-stall converters can also create additional heat and change street-driving characteristics. C5 owners commonly combine converter changes with rear-gear changes because much of the rear drivetrain is already being accessed. Our builds are set up accordingly: Twisted Street™: 1600-1800 stock-stall HD lockup converter Twisted Pro™: 1800-2100 HD lockup converter, with higher-stall and billet upgrades available Twisted Punisher™: billet multi-disc lockup converter custom matched to the vehicle For a Punisher converter, we require cam specs, rear gear ratio, tire size, power-adder information and intended use before selecting the stall.
Do rear gears affect the C5 4L60E and transmission tuning?
Yes. Automatic C5s were commonly equipped with different rear-axle ratios, and changing the differential ratio changes the relationship between vehicle speed, engine RPM and transmission shift scheduling. C5 owners moving from 2.73 to 3.15 or 3.42 gears commonly have the vehicle calibration adjusted so the transmission and speed calculations match the new rear gear. Rear gear ratio is also one of the factors we use when selecting a performance torque converter. If you're ordering a transmission for a C5 with a non-stock rear gear, tell us the current ratio when ordering.
