FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a 65RFE and 66RFE transmission?
1. What is the difference between a 65RFE and 66RFE transmission? The 65RFE is primarily found in Ram 1500 trucks, Dodge Durangos, and Jeep Grand Cherokees. The 66RFE was designed for heavier Ram 2500 and 3500 gas-powered trucks. Although both belong to Chrysler's RFE transmission family, the 66RFE uses different gear ratios, planetary assemblies, and internal clutch hardware. They are not direct replacements for one another.
What causes a 66RFE transmission to shift hard or go into limp mode?
Common causes include valve-body wear, hydraulic pressure loss, solenoid problems, and internal clutch damage. Symptoms may include harsh shifts, delayed engagement, slipping, incorrect gear-ratio codes, or the transmission staying in a limited gear range. A complete diagnostic inspection is necessary to identify the failure. Replacing the solenoid pack or valve body alone will not correct damaged internal clutches.
Are valve-body problems common on the 65RFE and 66RFE?
Valve-body wear and hydraulic leakage are documented service concerns in the RFE transmission family. Worn valve bores, pressure-control problems, accumulator issues, and internal cross-leaks can affect clutch application and shift quality. Twisted Torque disassembles, inspects, and remanufactures the valve body in-house, performing applicable factory and technical service corrections as part of the build.
Can I replace just the valve body instead of rebuilding the transmission?
Can I replace just the valve body instead of rebuilding the transmission? Sometimes. If the problem is isolated to the valve body and the internal clutches are still in good condition, a properly remanufactured valve body may correct the issue. If the transmission has been slipping, overheating, producing excessive debris, or setting repeated gear-ratio codes, additional internal damage may already be present. We recommend a proper diagnosis before purchasing individual repair parts.
Does a replacement 65RFE or 66RFE need programming?
Both transmissions require the applicable Chrysler Quick Learn procedure following replacement. Quick Learn allows the transmission control system to establish the appropriate clutch-fill and adaptation values for the rebuilt transmission. A complete PCM or TCM software flash is not normally required when the vehicle's original controller remains functional and compatible. Quick Learn must be completed using compatible diagnostic equipment.
