Can I use a 6R80 transmission for a Coyote swap?
Yes. The 6R80 is a popular automatic transmission choice for Ford Coyote swaps, including classic Mustangs, Broncos, F-100s, restomods and custom builds. Depending on the vehicle and engine combination, the swap may require a standalone transmission controller, custom crossmember, driveshaft modifications and other installation components.
Do I need a standalone controller for a 6R80 swap?
In many custom applications, yes. When the 6R80 is installed outside its original factory-controlled application, a compatible standalone transmission controller such as the US Shift Quick 6 can provide transmission control and tuning. The exact requirements depend on the engine management system and vehicle electronics.
Will a 6R80 fit in an early Bronco or classic Ford?
The 6R80 has been successfully installed in early Broncos, classic Ford trucks, Mustangs and other custom vehicles, but fitment varies by application. Transmission tunnel clearance, crossmember location, driveshaft length, exhaust routing and transfer-case configuration should all be considered before installation.
Can I use a 6R80 in a 4x4 Bronco build?
Yes, but the correct transmission and transfer-case setup are critical. Early Bronco 6R80 builds may require a 4WD 6R80 and the appropriate transfer-case adapter. Builders have successfully paired 6R80 transmissions with aftermarket transfer cases and adapted setups for early Bronco applications.
What else do I need when swapping a 6R80 into a custom vehicle?
A 6R80 swap is more than just the transmission. Depending on the vehicle, you may need a compatible torque converter, transmission controller, wiring, shifter, crossmember or mount, transmission cooler, modified or custom driveshaft and, on 4x4 builds, the proper transfer-case adapter.
