What is the best transmission for an overdrive conversion?
The best transmission depends on the vehicle, engine, horsepower, gearing and intended use. Popular options include the 700R4 and 200-4R for classic GM applications, the AOD for classic Ford applications and the 4L80E for higher-power GM and LS-based builds.
Can I replace a TH350 or TH400 with an overdrive transmission?
Yes. Many vehicles originally equipped with a TH350 or TH400 can be converted to a 700R4, 200-4R or another overdrive transmission. Required parts and modifications vary by vehicle and transmission combination.
Can I upgrade from a 4L60E to a 4L80E?
Yes. A 4L60E-to-4L80E conversion is a popular upgrade for GM trucks, SUVs, LS swaps and performance applications requiring greater transmission capability.
Can an Early Bronco be converted from a C4 to an AOD?

What is needed to swap a 4L60E to a 4L80E?
A 4L60E-to-4L80E conversion may require changes to the transmission crossmember, driveshaft, wiring, cooler lines, transmission control or tuning depending on the vehicle. Twisted Torque offers 4L80E conversion packages for many GM truck, SUV, LS swap and performance applications.
Which transmission conversion is best for an LS swap?
The best transmission for an LS swap depends on horsepower, torque, vehicle weight, gearing and intended use. The 4L80E is a popular choice for higher-horsepower LS applications, while other GM overdrive transmissions may be better suited for lower-power street builds.
Will I need to modify my driveshaft for a transmission conversion?
It depends on the transmission and vehicle. Some swaps are very straightforward. For example, replacing a short-tail TH350 with a 200-4R in many classic GM applications such as a Chevelle can often retain the existing driveshaft and 27-spline slip yoke because the transmissions are nearly the same overall length. The crossmember will typically need to be relocated for the 200-4R. A larger conversion, such as replacing a TH350 with a 4L80E in a Camaro, may require a different or shortened driveshaft, different slip yoke, crossmember relocation or replacement, and other installation changes depending on the year and drivetrain. Always verify your exact vehicle, existing transmission, driveshaft length and rear-end configuration before ordering. Twisted Torque can help determine what your application requires.
