Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Small Block and Big Block E4OD?
The biggest difference is the bellhousing pattern and engine application. Our Small Block E4OD is built for compatible Ford 5.0L / 302 and 5.8L / 351W applications. Our Big Block E4OD uses the Ford big-block / 385-series pattern used with compatible 351M, 400, 370, 429, 460 and 385-series-based engines. They are not the same case, so we need to know exactly what engine the transmission is going behind before we build it.
Are all Ford E4OD transmissions the same?
No. Ford made numerous changes to the E4OD throughout its production run. Case configuration, bellhousing pattern, electronics, solenoid packs, pumps, valve bodies, output shafts and other parts can vary by year and application. That's why we ask for the year, vehicle, engine and 2WD/4WD configuration before building an E4OD. Don't order one based on “it's an E4OD” alone.
Can I replace my E4OD with a 4R100?
Sometimes, but a 4R100 is not a universal drop-in replacement for every E4OD. Year, engine, bellhousing pattern, electronics, sensors, converter, valve body and output configuration all have to be considered. If you're looking at an E4OD-to-4R100 swap or interchange, call us with the vehicle and drivetrain information before ordering.
Do I need an auxiliary transmission cooler with an E4OD?
If you're towing, hauling, running an RV or motorhome, using larger tires, or making additional horsepower, proper auxiliary cooling is extremely important. The cooler and cooler lines must also be clean and have unrestricted flow before installing a replacement transmission. If the previous transmission contaminated the cooling system with metal or clutch material, the contaminated cooler should be replaced. We offer a heavy-duty auxiliary cooler and a high-capacity deep aluminum pan for applications that need additional cooling and fluid capacity.
Which Twisted Torque E4OD build do I need?
Don't choose an E4OD based on horsepower alone. We look at engine, horsepower, vehicle weight, towing load, tire size, rear gear, power adders and how the vehicle is actually used.
